Grants of up to £50,000 are available for projects of up to two years.
 
There is no limit on the number of applications one organisation can make.

Extended Desciption

The Small Charities Challenge Fund (SCCF) is part of UK Aid Direct, the Department for International Development’s (DFID) main fund for small and medium sized civil society organisations. UK Aid Direct operates in the lowest 50 countries in the Human Development Index and in countries DFID considers to be of high or moderate fragility.
 
The funding is intended to support and strengthen the work of small UK registered charities to help enhance their capacity to carry out work in the priority countries in efforts to tackle poverty and work towards achieving the Global Goals.

Key Criteria

Any small-sized, not-for-profit UK registered organisation can apply.
 
To be eligible, applicants must:
  • Have an annual income of £250,000 or less.
  • Be registered as a not-for-profit organisation in the UK.
  • Have their own UK specific constitution and an independent board of trustees.
Organisations that are part of a larger international family will need to demonstrate significant autonomy. Their organisation must be registered in the UK and have its own UK specific constitution and an independent board of trustees. The board must be locally appointed and be free and able to make independent decisions on strategic and operational issues.
 
Applicants will need to show that they:
  • Aim to reach the most vulnerable or marginalised in society.
  • Contribute toward the Global Goals.
  • Consider DFID's wider strategic objectives.
  • Support the goals of UK Aid Direct.

Eligible Expenditure

The funding is for projects to scale-up and increase the reach and efficiency of their interventions in:
  • Any of the lowest 50 countries in the UN Human Development Index (HDI).
  • The countries that DFID considers to be of high or moderate fragility.

Restrictions

The following are not eligible for funding:
  • Poverty alleviation work or awareness raising activities in the UK.
  • Activities which may lead to civil unrest.
  • Groups linked to any terrorist organisation.
  • Organisations which discriminate against any group on the basis of gender, disability, race, colour, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion.
  • Areas covered by other DFID funding schemes.
  • Major capital expenditure, such as construction or purchase of buildings and purchase of land, cannot be supported as a primary focus of the proposed project.
  • Educational scholarships.
  • Stand-alone activities, such as one-off conferences, seminars, training events, exchanges, and costs associated with participants attending events.
  • Core costs.
  • Proselytising activities.
  • Partisan political stance.

Application Procedure

Applications can be submitted at any time. All applications will be reviewed every six months.

The application process is as follows:

  • Register online to apply.
  • Complete an eligibility assessment.
  • Complete a full application online.

All applications must be submitted online. Applications sent by post or email will not be considered.
